Location
Lvshunkou District is situated at the most southern part of Liaotung Peninsula. It is embraced by vast seas in three directions. The county is bestowed with marvelous natural beauty due to this advantaged geographical position. Lvshun is considered to be a nationally important scenic spot, a vast nature reserve and a national forest park. People are able to appreciate the beauty of the dividing line of Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. As its name indicates, the water of Yellow Sea is extremely yellow compared with that of Bohai Sea. Apart from the magnificent watery scenery, the seaside landscape is much more primitive and enjoyable in comparison with those crowded beaches in downtown Dalian.
History
Lushunkou District is also known as Port Arthur in the history. In 1880, the late Qing government built the harbour to be the military bases for its North Fleet, which is an essential part of its military modernization. Unfortunately, the fleet experienced a devastating defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. A decade later, Japan-Russia war of 1904 also left many unpleasant memories. In modern era, Lvshun is entangled with the experiences brought by the successive occupation of Russia and Japan.
Memorial of Myriad Loyalists was built to commemorate the Chinese people who died in the Port Arthur Massacre following the Sino-Japanese War. Accordingly, the victorious Japanese forces slaughtered nearly 20,000 unarmed common people there. In 1896, after the Japanese retreat, corps of the Qing Dynasty built the Stele of Myriad Loyalists. Nowadays, the descendents of the late soldiers and civilians go there to commemorate their ancestors annually.
